is on republicans to fix this deficit problem or you know, this fiscal cliff, it's not. both sides are willing to negotiate -- i mean white house is willing to negotiate. they made an offer and mitch mcconnell laughed at that time yesterday. john boehner went on the sunday shows and said basically we're not interested in any of this. so it's not -- the onus is not on the republicans. they're the ones who haven't done anything since election day to try to advance the ball. >> stephanie: yep absolutely. oliver north on hannity's show -- oh, is he judging susan rice? her basic -- yeah. >> susan rice, if she gets to become -- i'll make a prediction for you. she gets to become secretary of state. you will see the united nations get -- get a united states shot on the arms control treaties that the united nations launch and they will supercede the constitution of the united states. that's where they're headed. >> oh, my god! >> this from the guy who sent weapons to the iranians, funding right wing death squads. and lied about it all

fiscal cliff. >> obama: i don't think it is acceptable for you for a handful of republicans in congress to hold middle class tax cuts hostage simply because they don't want tax rates on upper income folks to go up. >> stephanie: uh, yeah! let's go to kathy in mobile, alabama. >> mobile. >> caller: actually, it is mobile. i know you're not from the south. something i've heard recently which is totally stupid was someone made the comment that normally we only work 25 years and then we live only 40 years after that. a. >> stephanie: right. >> caller: which is crazy. if you started at 18, you reach retirement at 43 or even if you start working at 35. >> stephanie: this is something grover norquist said yesterday. i'm like who only works 25 years? math is -- that's what the president said. republicans have to stop using political math to say how much they're willing to raise tax rates on the wealthiest 2% and specify the spending cuts. they're the ones that aren't being specific. i'm flabbergasted how f

the country will think republicans are to blame if we go over the fiscal cliff, six out of ten voters in november said the tax rates should go up, how much longer can he afford to politically keep this pledge and he said look, you heard it there, the rates when we close the revenues, loopholes will go up on the rich people. that still is the mindset. what's interesting, is talking to republicans leaving the house conference gop conference this morning, there is a lot of support for speaker boehner. there aren't cracks like there were during the debt limit where he had a faction that was lining up against him wholeheartedly. even after yesterday we heard all the stuff of fallout from the conservative right against his position, that conference this morning was pretty supportive of speaker boehner and seem to be -- say something we say way too often here in washington, d.c., doubling down on the speaker's approach, at least here in early december. >> everyone seems to be doubling down, luke. i mean the idea that now nobodies's moving at all. i thought it was interesting that boehner is

for democrats. caller: we would not be having a fiscal cliff if we did not lead the tea party republicans slip in under the radar in 2010. in 2014 we are going to sweep them out of there. host: what do the tea party people have to do with the fiscal cliff? caller: we would not have if this -- we would have a fiscal cliff if not for the tea party republicans. the republicans will never agree with obama. they will never do it. they are undercover klansmen. they go up to washington and have been causing us trouble ever since. we're going to take our brains to the polls next time. host: from pennsylvania on the line for republicans. caller: a couple of points. one has to do with president obama saying we must have a balanced approach. the second one has to do with the term mandate. the third has to do with what the congress is. president obama says we must have a balanced approach to this. when i look at the term balance, i think, ok. the have revenue increases. you must also have at the same time expenditure decreases. i hear nothing but let's increase revenue, i hear nothing about decrease in ex

it comes to taxes. as you all know by now house republicans sent in a fiscal cliff counter offer yesterday but the white house is calling it no good. i want to give you an idea of where the two sides stand right now. boehner's new plan would raise $2.2 trillion. now it would extend the bush tax cuts for everyone and yes that does include the top 2%. and it would instead raise $800 billion in revenue from so-called tax reform and that's what we mean when we talk about capping deductions and closing loopholes. the rest of the money comes from cuts to both mandatory and discretionary programs. now to recap again on the president's offer, he wants to raise $1.6 trillion, that's double boehner's amount on the rich an and he's asking for more than $200 billion in stimulus spending and promising about $400 billion worth of cuts to social programs. now obviously those two plans have very little in common. neither side is budging when it comes to their demands on taxes. but now here are a few problems with boehner's proposal.
